A Whaanau Journey
Driven by a deep desire to protect younger generations from the challenges faced by his Paapaa and tuupuna, Maatua Tom shares a koorero of love, loss, and a commitment to a healthier future for his mokopuna.
Maatua Tom Roa, also known as Professor Tom Roa, is a cherished historian, cultural expert from Ngaati Maniapoto and Waikato. Maatua Tom's charisma and infectious spirit are present in every space he occupies.
He was diagnosed with Mate Huka Momo Rua (Type 2 Diabetes) at the age of 50, with the condition present within generations of his family. Four of his fifteen siblings have lived with Maate Huka, a sobering reminder of its prevalence among Maaori and its impact upon generations.
Maatua Tom is blessed with three beautiful daughters and his loving wife who stand as the pou of strength in his life.
His own Paapaa endured the profound impact of Maate Huka, becoming a double amputee. This experience impressed upon Maatua Tom the importance of "quality" of life – a lesson learnt from the precious time shared with his Paapaa.
