Finding Strength on Dialysis

Whaea Maaria

Maaria's koorero offers a powerful message of hope and resilience. She is a passionate advocate, sharing her experiences and knowledge about diabetes to educate and empower others.

Whaea Maaria is a strong wahine from Waikato Tainui. For 43 years, she has lived with Mate Huka Momo Rua (Type 2 Diabetes), including 17 years of dialysis. However, this does not define her. She is a loving mother of five – three daughters and two sons, and Nan and Great Nan to many.

Her days were a whirlwind of love, hard work, and dedication, often leaving little time for herself. The demands of motherhood and multiple jobs meant that healthy eating sometimes took a backseat, a common challenge for many people.

Whaea Maaria enjoys teaching the next generations all about Mate Huka and the consequences of not eating healthy kai.  She cherishes every moment spent with her precious whaanau, friends, her church and her community.

Please note: This mahi uses the Waikato dialect convention of double vowels to represent long vowel sounds, in place of macrons. This choice reflects the regional context of the Ngaaruawahia participants who contributed significantly to its content.
